Social action and civic engagement have been a hallmark of Leo Baeck Temple since its inception. Founding Rabbi Leonard Beerman was known for his political activism and leadership in interfaith dialogue.
In 2012, LBT partnered with OneLA, an interfaith coalition and local affiliate of IAF, the oldest and largest national organizing and leadership development network. At the time, the community organizing team was known as CBCO (Congregation-based Community Organizing).
In 2017, Leo Baeck Temple made the decision to affiliate with LA Voice, a multi-faith, multiracial community dedicated to transforming Los Angeles County into a place that reflects the dignity of all of its people. At that time CBCO was renamed the Community Organizing Leadership Team (COLT). LA Voice, the local affiliate of Faith in Action, is deeply connected with other synagogues, churches, and mosques – thereby leveraging our impact. LA Voice provides information and training around pending legislation and opportunities for organizing in Los Angeles. This partnership is a complement to our partnership with Reform CA, the California arm of the Religious Action Center.
