La Traviata (11/28/19) – Literally, the fallen woman. This middle period Verdi opera is one of the first to deal with contemporary life. Based on a tale by Alexandre Dumas fils, Verdi’s title character, a courtesan and the toast of Paris, gives up everything for the man she loves. Based on the life of a tragic historic character, she would be a forerunner of Bizet’s Carmen, inspire late-nineteenth century Italian verismo heroines, and later to Greta Garbo’s film portrayal of the Lady of the Camellias.
Carmen (1/23/19) – Bizet’s iconic tale of the irresistible woman is one of the most popular operas in the repertoire. For Carmen love is like a bird. In time, it may come to you, but if you chase it, it flies away. Bizet never lived long enough to realize or enjoy the extraordinary popularity of his greatest work. Themes of a strong and free woman, attraction, passion, and fate resonate today.
