In the late 19th century, opera expanded into countries seeking to express their stories, cultures and musical heritage in their own voice and language. Their stories were often regional variations of a shared theme – such as women in water. Think of mermaids or sirens. The Slavic version was a rusalka, a fish-woman – like a Siren in Homer’s Odyssey, who would lure unwary males to their doom. Dvorak’s heroine, Rusalka, longs to have a soul and experience love like a human. Come hear her story and experience her haunting soprano aria, Song to the Moon.
