In this early Mozart opera, the title tells the story. Captured at sea by pirates, Kostanza is held captive at Pasha Selim’s palace in Turkey. True to her name, our heroine resists the advances of the Pasha, as her beloved Belmonte tries to free her. Vienna in Mozart’s time was a multi-ethnic center. In the 100 years before and after Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio, operas and plays would feature exotic Middle Eastern settings and behaviors, from enlightened to gross. Learn why Turkey; why a benevolent Pasha; and why this opera in German.
Next class: Strauss’ Salome on January 25th
