In a semi-biographical work, the poet E.T.A. Hoffmann tells of falling madly in and out of love with a series of women. With each new affair, an evil presence intervenes. He feels doomed. Disappointed with love and his work, he drinks himself into oblivion. Yet, he and we are left with a series of remarkable tales laced together with extraordinary melodies by Jaques Offenbach – images, memories, and the lingering hope that perhaps the next time will be better.
