Hansel and Gretel (10/24/19) – A Fairy tale opera – one of a handful: Cinderella, The Magic Flute, Rusalka, and Hansel and Gretel come to mind. Based on tales by the Brothers Grimm, this childhood favorite was composed by Engelbert Humperdinck. He was inspired by a libretto written by his sister. A brother and sister lost in a great forest, hungry and alone, take shelter in a mysterious gingerbread house.

Next Session:

La Traviata (11/28/19) – Literally, the fallen woman. This middle period Verdi opera is one of the first to deal with contemporary life. Based on a tale by Alexandre Dumas fils, Verdi’s title character, a courtesan and the toast of Paris, gives up everything for the man she loves. Based on the life of a tragic historic character, she would be a forerunner of Bizet’s Carmen, inspire late-nineteenth century Italian verismo heroines, and later to Greta Garbo’s film portrayal of the Lady of the Camellias.
