Don Carlos (9/26/2018) – Verdi’s 23rd opera of 27. A love that could not be leads to the loveless marriage between a young foreign princess and a much older ruler. Personal lives and yearnings for freedom contend with secrets, passions, love, hate, power, betrayal, political correctness, a special prosecutor, and religious persecution. Current events? Not even close: Spain 450 years ago – at the time of Philip II and the Spanish Inquisition. We’ll discuss some of features that make this one of Verdi’s great works.
Aida (10/3/2018) – Just 4 years after Don Carlos came one of Verdi’s most popular operas. Set in ancient Egypt, Aida has a symmetrical structure. Two princesses; each the daughter of warring kings, one Ethiopian, the other Egyptian; both heirs to their respective thrones; rivals for the love of the heroic leader of the victorious Egyptian army. Love, duty, power and patriotism are tested in a time of war. Can personal desires overcome the inexorable demands of church and state? Come find out.
