The 2016-2017 LBT opera season begins with a bang. Young Verdi was 34 when he composed Macbeth, based on Shakespeare’s great tragedy. It would be 40 years until he returned to Shakespeare with his last two operas – Otello and Falstaff. Macbeth is unique in many ways, a mid-19th century opera without tenor-soprano lovers. His Lady Macbeth does not win us over with pretty music. She scares the pants off of us. Come to LBT as we discuss this remarkable work, one of Verdi’s personal favorites and mine. (Next class: October 26 with Verdi’s Nabucco)
