What does it mean to celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, today’s political and social moment?  On Friday, January 12th at 7:30 pm, LBT will strive to honor the prophetic vision of Rev. Dr. King by inviting one of California’s most dynamic speakers and justice leaders, Rev. Ben McBride, Co-Director of PICO California, the largest multiracial faith-based community organizing network in the state.  LBT’s social justice work is done in partnership with the PICO California network, so we are especially honored to have Rev. McBride with us for such an important Shabbat.  Come open your heart and mind to prayer, song, words of Torah and the prophetic call to do justice in our time!  Rev. McBride’s extensive and impressive bio can be found below.

Rev. Ben McBride, Co-Director, PICO California

Rev. Ben McBride is a native of San Francisco and a longtime activist for peace and justice in the Bay Area.

Rev. McBride has a history of spiritual leadership, beginning as a youth pastor and continuing throughout his term as collegiate pastor for Greater St. Paul Baptist Church and Shiloh Church. In 2008, he relocated his family to a difficult neighborhood in Oakland known as “The Kill Zone.” This positioned him to gain firsthand understanding in order to intelligently respond to the epidemic of gun violence.

During this tenure, he also served as Executive Director of Cityteam, a Christian non-profit providing rescue and recovery; medical and financial; educational and spiritual opportunities to hurting and homeless Oakland residents.

In late 2014, Rev. McBride became the primary civilian trainer for the Oakland Police Department’s Procedural Justice & Police Legitimacy Course. Though the course is facilitated nationally, Rev. McBride is the sole community participant currently providing training and consultation to police departments, nationally. He is deeply committed to rebuilding the relationship between the community and police departments through reform and practice.

In June 2015, Rev. McBride joined the PICO California team and now serves as the co-Director with a focus on formation and innovation.

Rev. McBride is an internationally sought after speaker and has shared his motivational message of peacemaking and transformation in Canada, the United Kingdom and the Middle East.

Rev. McBride and his wife Gynelle have been married for 15 years and they reside in Oakland, California with their three beautiful daughters: Brittani, Jasmin and Symonne.
