Jewish education is more than the study of
Hebrew or the telling of Bible stories. It is the sum total of all the
experiences and learning of a people that is 3500 years old. The Religious
School at Leo Baeck Temple teaches children about their heritage and prepares
them to participate in a lifetime of Jewish practice, values and community.
Children begin by attending on Sunday from
kindergarten through third grade. In grades four through seven, they come on
Sunday and Wednesday to allow time to study Hebrew language, prayer and Torah
for those preparing to become bat or bar mitzvah. Grades eight through ten
return to a once-a-week program, with eighth grade meeting on Sunday mornings
and ninth and tenth grades meeting on Wednesday evenings, culminating in a
Confirmation ceremony.
Our curriculum includes an understanding of
Jewish concepts and active participation in Gemilut Chasadim (acts of
righteousness), music and art, a study of Israel, attention to current events
from a Jewish perspective and other varied and interesting subject matter.
Because we believe parents are our partners in their child's education, each
class has a component in which families study together. In addition to
academics, there is tefillah (religious service) for every age group.
Our greatest asset is our experienced
professional faculty. We are also a training site for Hebrew Union College
graduate interns preparing to direct their own schools. Our rabbis and cantor
are always active participants in providing inspiring and meaningful educational
experiences for our Jewish learning community.
