Tikkun olam, repair of a broken world,
community activism, a passion for social causes, a commitment to human rights
and improved relations among all people are hallmarks of Leo Baeck Temple.
We bear a rich history of social action and
continue to move forward on issues of contemporary concern with a view to the
future. Congregants of all ages participate in the various activities available.
Gemilut Chasadim / Mitzvah Day includes
all generations in programs which demonstrate Jewish values. Grandparents,
parents and children prepare lunch for people with AIDS, visit with residents at
homes for the aging, remove graffiti or choose from other possibilities which
involve us in improving our community.
AIDS Luncheon Group provides a valuable
service to AIDS outpatients at County-USC Medical Center. "Preppers"
prepare healthy lunches in the temple kitchen for the patients and "schleppers"
deliver and serve the lunches to the hospital, joining the patients for the
meal. This human touch and personal care provides nourishment to the bodies and
souls of people living with AIDS.
Sukkot in April is an annual event to
rehabilitate the homes of low-income homeowners who are also often elderly or
disabled, so they may live in safety, warmth and comfort. Each year Leo Baeck
Temple members participate with Christmas in April*South
Central Los Angeles in a special relationship with a family in need. Even the
unskilled find they are able to contribute to providing decent housing to the
family whose home remodeling we sponsor.
The Social Action Shabbat Lecture Series
brings prominent speakers to temple for Friday services. They discuss issues and
may suggest solutions to some of the challenges of our time.
