With great joy and anticipation, we are proud to introduce our new Cantor and our new Assistant Rabbi, who will officially assume their duties at Leo Baeck Temple on July 1, 2022.
Following an expansive search by our Cantorial Search Committee, we are delighted to announce that Cantor Sara Hass will begin serving LBT this summer.
The members of our Cantorial Search Committee felt strongly that the union between Cantor Hass and Leo Baeck Temple was bashert – destined to be. Cantor Hass grew up not far from LBT and even served one year as the music specialist in our Religious School back when she was finishing high school. As it became clear that she possessed a truly rare talent as an extraordinary vocalist with a deeply Jewish soul, she pursued cantorial studies at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, receiving her ordination in 2015 and presenting a cantorial thesis on Jewish musical creativity in Los Angeles. She then returned to southern California, where she became the first-ever Cantor at Temple Israel in Long Beach, excelling especially in her work with B’nai Mitzvah students and her use of technology to deepen the congregational musical experience. In 2018, Cantor Hass was invited to be the Campus Cantor of the Los Angeles campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, where she continues to contribute to the learning and growth of an entire era of young rabbis. It is our congregation’s tremendous good fortune that Cantor Hass has decided to continue her impressive career at Leo Baeck Temple, and we look forward to offering you numerous opportunities to meet her this coming summer.
While our Cantorial Search Committee was doing its work, our Rabbinic Search Committee was reviewing resumes, reading and viewing sample sermons, conducting challenging interviews, and engaging in study with our top candidates. After careful consideration, our search led us right back home – we are thrilled to report that our own LBT Rabbinic Intern, Scott Goldberg, will become our new Assistant Rabbi.
Quite simply, Scott Goldberg is an exceptional young rabbi who is a perfect fit for Leo Baeck Temple. While his list of accomplishments before becoming our intern is long and impressive, it is the broad recognition that Scott has received from our own congregants that distinguishes him for this position. As so many of you have already discovered, he possesses all the gifts and instincts that we have always treasured in our rabbis. His intellect, incisiveness and conscience elevate his work as a teacher of both young and old. His soulful wisdom animates his presence as a leader of worship and spiritual practice. His deep humanity has won the trust and affection of countless temple members, whether in times of joy or moments of sorrow. His commitment to innovation and rigorous professionalism make him a rabbi our community can count on. We celebrate Scott’s rabbinic ordination, which will take place in May, and we are delighted that he has chosen to begin his new career with us.
Cantor Hass and soon-to-be Rabbi Goldberg – who have already worked together at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion – will lead our congregation to new heights. We look forward to joining with you in welcoming them into their new roles this coming summer and enjoying the many blessings of their partnership in our community!
