Community Organizing (COLT)

This group is like nothing else we do at Leo Baeck Temple.  It combines community-building with action for social justice.  It combines listening, learning, and leadership.  It combines power with heart.  If you want to feel that you are making a difference in the world and in our city, get involved with community organizing.  If you want to get to know Los Angelenos across lines of race, class, and religion, join us.

COLT’s Mission Statement:

Leo Baeck Temple’s Community Organizing Leadership Team (COLT) works to heal the world through building relationships, acting in partnership, and engaging politically.

Our work is based in relationship and only through strong relationships can we accomplish our goals.  Judaism informs our work in creating a more just world.

Who We Are:

Leo Baeck Temple’s Community Organizing Leadership Team (COLT) is a congregation-based community effort comprised of approximately twenty temple members.  We are led by LBT members and supported by the Assistant Rabbi, a rabbinic intern, and the clergy team as a whole.

COLT’s Operating Principles:

  • Approach our justice work with an organizing lens, committing to the rigor of broad-based organizing while being creative and responsive to the moment.
  • Develop and deepen relationships within Leo Baeck Temple and develop leaders within LBT.
  • Invest in and be accountable to relationships across lines of race, class, and faith.
  • Build our power and our partners’ power – to create a more just world.
